Research shows that good mental health is linked to improved learning, creativity, higher levels of productivity, better social relationships, good physical health and increased life expectancy. Mental health has a huge impact on every aspect of people’s lives. It affects one’s behaviour, physical health, work and relationships, as well as the people around them. In our blog post, we share suggestions on things you can do to improve your mental health.

Look after your physical health

Studies have shown looking after your physical health can help to improve your mental health. This doesn’t mean you have to go to the gym or do a hard-core work out. You could do any activity that gets your body moving, for example: you could go for a walk outside, walk in the shops, yoga, dancing, take the stairs, cleaning, etc.

Talk to someone

Whether it be a friend, family member or a professional, it helps to relieve stress talking to someone about your problems. Remember reaching out to someone is not a sign of weakness.

Form connections with others

Humans are naturally social creatures, which makes us desire connections with others. When we form these connections, our emotional needs are met. Therefore, it helps to surround yourself with a positive support network.

Practice self-care

Engage in activities that bring you joy. This could be anything from reading, to watching a movie, taking a hot bath or shower, listening to or playing music, gardening, the list is endless.

Practice mindfulness meditation

Studies have shown practicing mindfulness can help promote positive thinking. Mindfulness is focusing on how your body feels in the present moment. Some examples of mindfulness exercises include taking a few minutes to focus on your breathing, going for a nature walk, writing how you feel in a journal and taking little breaks throughout the day.

Identify and focus on your strengths

Studies have shown finding your strengths can help promote a better mental health and help you develop a sense of meaning and purpose in your life. Some examples of finding your strengths include thinking about things you have achieved, asking a loved one what they think your strengths are, writing in a journal daily about activities you enjoy doing and why you enjoy them and thinking about what fulfills your needs and goals.

It is also important to remember you are not alone and there is help out there. If you are in urgent need of assistance or are experiencing suicidal thoughts, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Suicide Call Back Service on 1300 659 467.

These are 24 hour services.
