Profile
My name is Peta and I have lived on the beautiful Sunshine Coast for the past 20 years. I made the decision to start up this business “Right to Recovery” so that I could spend time engaging in something that I love and that I am passionate about, whilst also managing a work/life balance for myself and my family.
I am very familiar with services and networks within the Sunshine Coast region, that participants may wish to be connected to, or may require advocacy and support to positively engage with, as a part of their NDIS plan and funding package.
I am no stranger to the NDIS, and within my roles I have assisted multiple people to access the NDIS. I was also lucky enough to have the opportunity to participate in NDIS Support Coordination training and to try my hand at NDIS Support Coordination in between roles.
I have held the roles of Case Manager and Support Facilitator for non-government mental health programs that may be familiar to some participants.
My extensive experience in walking alongside people facing the common barriers that often come with their psychosocial diagnosis, assists me to successfully integrate positive recovery strategies and planning into their lives.
I see great importance in assisting with the navigation and connection of people with local services, communities, and networks to benefit their day-to-day feelings of connectedness, purpose and meaning.
Cultural respect and awareness is also something that I believe to be an imperative fragment of our community’s ability to strengthen and heal, in order to support each other without prejudice.
Who does Right to Recovery support?
Plan Managed or Self-Managed NDIS Participants that would like to engage the support of a Psychosocial Recovery Coach.
What is a Psychosocial Recovery Coach?
A Psychosocial Recovery coach is a reasonably new NDIS service designed to support individuals with a psychosocial disability to take more control of their lives and to better manage the complex challenges of day-to-day living.
Psychosocial Recovery Coaches support individuals with psychosocial disability to recognise, reflect and take responsibility of their own recovery. They work collaboratively with individuals, their families, carers, and other services to design and implement a recovery plan and help with the coordination of other NDIS supports. Individuals can choose to work with a Recovery Coach who has learned or lived experience of psychosocial disability.
What does a Recovery Coach do?
Recovery Coaches work with individuals with a psychosocial disability to:
-
Develop a recovery-enabling relationship
-
Increase awareness of choice and control
-
Identify individual goals and develop strategies to achieve them
-
Provide ongoing support and engagement (even in times of increased needs due to variation in individual mental illness)
-
Build individual capacity, increase recovery skills, resilience and decision making
How is it different to a Support Co-ordinator?
A Support Co-ordinator’s main focus is capacity building and working with an individual to get the most out of an NDIS plan. Individuals do not need a specific diagnosis to have support coordination as part of their NDIS plan.
A Psychosocial Recovery Coach is specifically designed for individuals who have a primary diagnosis of psychosocial disability. Recovery coaches offer a more hands-on approach, using their specific knowledge of mental health services, to ensure individuals receive the best support to reach their goals.
Initially, Support Co-ordination and Recovery Coaching were generally not being funded in the same plan although, both line items are rolling out in more recent plans.
